The Cousin Sandbox
Nobody talks enough about cousins.
Not parents, not teachers, not child development researchers. And honestly, that's a gap worth studying.
Growing up with dozens (I mean dozens) of cousins was one of the greatest educations I ever got.
Power dynamics, sharing, competition, loyalty, social reading, game theory in real time. You learn how to hold your own, how to lose, how to lead, and how to follow, all before anyone hands you a textbook.
That kind of learning does not happen in a classroom. It barely happens with your own siblings. Cousins are a different level. Same bloodline, different household rules. An intersting friction that might actually be the whole point.
Now I watch my kids count down the days or minutes until they see theirs, and something in me just warms up. There is a specific kind of joy a child holds when they are around their cousins. A freedom. A comfort. A wildness.
It is a relationship that deserves way more attention than the world gives it.
Someone should write the book on it. (Maybe I will 🤷🏻♂️)
